Helping Each Other in Times of Tragedy

This article posted on the LinkedIn Special Needs Group Site by Katy Faber offers a tribute to the fallen teachers of Sandy Hook Elementary School.  It speaks volumes about the selfless acts that teachers perform in our schools every day.

"I heard your stories today on the radio, on my way to school.  I heard what you did to protect your students.  I learned about your last act of bravery, of love, of kindness.

The profound impact of your actions stays with me today and will always.

As I walk around my school, I see my fellow teachers with new eyes. See, I always knew they lived and taught with love, kindness, compassion, and knowledge.  But as I look at them today, I saw you. I saw what you did for them.  The quiet bravery.  The willingness to stand up for children, be in meetings, conversations, reports or call out for support.  It is in each of them. Then to your extreme last act of love, of selflessness. I see this today, deep behind their eyes.  I know they would do the same thing. My colleagues, they would act as you did.

You showed America the heart and soul of teachers.  This undervalue, underpaid, often criticized much maligned profession called teaching."

When tragedy strikes, acts of kindness can give children hope.  Parents can comfort their children during difficult times by being there for them, answering their questions, giving them reassurance, and extra time and attention. It's time to turn off the TV and limit time spent in front of it. Listen carefully to your children, and be alert for significant changes in their behavior.  Be a role model for them by volunteering or doing something for others; they will learn as you lead by example.  Watch your own behavior and make a point of being sensitive to any crisis.
